Kanpur, the largest city of Uttar Pradesh., India, is an industrial settlement with long history. At the Mound of Jajmau, archaeological excavations unearthed remains of cultures as old as 600 BC to 1600 AD. Commercial and industrial museum exhibits crafts. Various plants and its’ products are on display in the Botany Museum located in Christ Church College, Kanpur.
More than half a dozen holy ghats viz. Aanandeshwar Ghat, Bhagwatdas Ghat, Bhairon Ghat, Massacre Ghat/ Nanarao Ghat, Rani Ghat, Sarsayya Ghat and Siddheshwar Ghat line banks of the Ganga.
The Kanpur Memorial Church in Lombardic gothic style, Shri Radhakrishna temple, a combination of modern and ancient architecture; Dwarka Dhish Temple; and Jain Glass Temple; attract people of different religion. "Gurudwara Banno Sahib" houses three and half century’s old manuscript of Gurugranth Sahib. Four well known temples including Aanandeshwar temple, Balkhandeshwar temple, Jageshwar temple and Siddheshwar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva are also located in the city. Ganesh Udayn houses a Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial.
Green spaces for leisure in the city are Agricultural Gardens, Brijendra Swarup Park, Children’s Park and recreation grounds around Moti Jheel, Ganesh Udyan, Gautam Buddha Park and Nana Rao Peshwa Park. Picnic lovers find solace in picturesque ambience of Allen Forest Zoo. Green Park stadium is known for cricket matches through out the world. Kamla Retreat, a picnic spot, has a museum of archaeological and historical artifacts, boating facility, swimming tank, and park.
Major clubs in the city are Cawnpore Club, Flying Club, Ganges club, Golf club and Kanpur Union Club. The popular hang out for movie buffs is Rave 3 Multiplex with three screens.
Kanpur is a seat of many important defense, educational, industrial, technology and training institutes such as Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Indian Institute of Technology, Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture & Technology, etc.
There are only a few high end hotels including Landmark hotel and Megahdoot hotel. But there are many budget hotels. The city has a number of eateries and restaurants serving both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. In some eateries, continental and Chinese cuisine can be relished.
